Reactive transport modelling of carbonate cementation in a deep saline aquifer, the Middle Jurassic Oolithe Blanche Formation, Paris Basin, France.

2016

10 pages; International audience; The Oolithe Blanche Formation (Bathonian, Middle Jurassic) is one of the deep saline aquifers of the Paris Basin in France. The spatial distribution of its reservoir properties (porosity, permeability, tortuosity, etc.) is now better known with relatively homogeneous properties, except for some levels in the central part of the basin, where permeability exhibits higher values. This spatial distribution has been correlated with diagenetic events (variability of cementation) and palaeo-fluid flow circulation phases leading to variable cementation. In this paper, numerical simulations of reactive transport are performed. They provide a preliminary quantitative…

2D Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical Modeling of (De)hydration Reactions in Deforming Heterogeneous Rock: The Periclase-Brucite Model Reaction

2020

Deformation at tectonic plate boundaries involves coupling between rock deformation, fluid flow, and metamorphic reactions, but quantifying this coupling is still elusive. We present a new two-dimensional hydro-mechanical-chemical numerical model and investigate the coupling between heterogeneous rock deformation and metamorphic (de)hydration reactions. We consider linear viscous compressible and power-law viscous shear deformation. Fluid flow follows Darcy's law with a Kozeny-Carman type permeability. We consider a closed isothermal system and the reversible (de)hydration reaction: periclase and water yields brucite. Fluid pressure within a circular or elliptical inclusion is initially bel…

Impact of Freshwater Inflow From the Volturno River on Coastal Circulation

2020

The coastal area located in front of the Volturno river's estuary (Gulf of Gaeta, central-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea) has been synoptically sampled during seven surveys, between June 2012 and October 2014. The vertical profiles of temperature and salinity have been acquired on a high resolution nearly-regular grid, in order to describe the spatial and temporal variability of the water masses characteristics. Moreover, to provide a first assessment of the steady circulation at small scale, the three-dimensional velocity field associated to each survey has been obtained through the full momentum equations of the Princeton Ocean Model. The data analysis has shown the entire water column characteri…

The numerical simulation of heat transfer during a hybrid laser–MIG welding using equivalent heat source approach

2014

International audience; The present study is dedicated to the numerical simulation of an industrial case of hybrid laser-MIG welding of high thickness duplex steel UR2507Cu with Y-shaped chamfer geometry. It consists in simulation of heat transfer phenomena using heat equivalent source approach and implementing in finite element software COMSOL Multiphysics. A numerical exploratory designs method is used to identify the heat sources parameters in order to obtain a minimal required difference between the numerical results and the experiment which are the shape of the welded zone and the temperature evolution in different locations. The obtained results were found in good correspondence with …

Collective Cell Migration in a Fibrous Environment: A Hybrid Multiscale Modelling Approach

2021

International audience; The specific structure of the extracellular matrix (ECM), and in particular the density and orientation of collagen fibres, plays an important role in the evolution of solid cancers. While many experimental studies discussed the role of ECM in individual and collective cell migration, there are still unanswered questions about the impact of nonlocal cell sensing of other cells on the overall shape of tumour aggregation and its migration type. There are also unanswered questions about the migration and spread of tumour that arises at the boundary between different tissues with different collagen fibre orientations. To address these questions, in this study we develop …

EXTERNAL RECIRCULATION IN PRS TYPE TURBINE: EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL RESULTS.

2022

Cavitation is a relevant phenomenon for structural safety and noise level in hydraulic turbines, occurring when water pressure falls below the vapor value at a given temperature. In this case bubbles of vapor grow inside the liquid and move along with it. When the pressure returns above the vapor value the bubble collapses, and the pressure can locally achieve very high values, up to 7000 bars (Kumar & Saini, 2010). Moreover, if the bubble was confined also by the solid wall of a blade, the solid particles suspended in the fluid can be transported by the fluid ones and hit the solid wall at very high velocity, generating erosion. Cavitation is also the source of high frequency noise, ve…

Effects of Air Tightness Tests on Steel Thin-Wall Box Structures with Circular and Rectangular Cross Sections

2019

In this paper, the effects of air tightness tests on steel box structures with rectangular or circular cross sections typical of port cranes (legs, arms, and crosspieces) are analyzed. Legs and arms are generally made with elements with profiles having a square or rectangular cross section, while the diagonal struts are made with profiles having circular cross sections. To verify the air tightness of these elements, a necessary requirement to protect them from corrosion if they are not protected with other protection techniques, air tightness tests are performed. These tests, in the framework of durability tests, must be carried out while maintaining the structure elasticity well below the …

Application of a 1-D numerical model to estimate the sediment transported along a river

2006

Natural rivers tend to adjust their plane shape and longitudinal profile in order to assume a configuration compatible with the changing hydraulic and man-made constraints. The causes of these bed variations are related to changes in independent river channel variables (increase in water discharge, decrease in sediment discharge, etc..) or to changes in river slope. River bed degradation and aggradation, often occurring as result of river morphological changes, modify the longitudinal bed profile of the river and the amount of sediment transported along the river until to reach the outlet. As an example, the construction of river dams produces large morphological consequences: when the stre…

Study of the performances of a fluidynamic actuator

2018

Aim of this paper is presented a new methodology to study how different geometric parameters affect the performance of a hydraulic actuator. Preliminarily, the real working conditions of a hydraulic machine have been simulated by means of a CFD module. After, to test the reliability of the simulations, the obtained numerical results have been compared with the experimental data of a real prototype. This comparison demonstrates a good level of agreement between numerical and experimental results. Different simulations have been setup by modifying the actuator geometry and evaluating the efficiency of every analysed configuration. The results of this study give useful guidelines for the choic…
